Chapter One -- More than Meets the Eye
(Symbols)
- Opening Prayer: Lord, we have gathered in your
name. Help us to strengthen our roots of faith by being willing
to absorb a deep knowledge about the prayers and sacraments of the
Church.
- Picture, page 6-7. Read scripture phrase. Each
student responded about what he saw and the meaning.
- FORUM is a Latin word for the place where the ideas and work
of the community were explored and discussed. It was the center
of public life in a Roman city. So important was this concept
that in English the word forum
refers to an intense exchange of ideas, thoughts, and opinions.
Each lesson will begins with this kind of exchange and dialogue.
The Forum Assignment will be
given at the end of each session. It has two parts to be PREPARED
before the next meeting:
- The next lesson is read thoroughly. Key ideas are
underlined in pencil.
- The forum activity or question is prepared for
discussion. This preparation and subsequent participation are
important for optimum learning.
- Chapter is read outloud by students and teacher taking
turns. Stopping for questions and discussion.
- HOMEWORK
- On page 12, write reponses to the Symbol chart
- Forum Assignment
- Read pages 14-21. Underline in pencil statements
that express key concepts.
- Complete the handout Thinking
Symbolically. Write a brief paryer about your concerns.
- Share "Highlights for Home" with your parents.

Chapter Two -- The Prayer of the Church
- Opening Prayer-- Response: I will lift
up my hands, calling on your name. Situations: When I am happy
and my life is running smoothly; When I am upset and everything
seems topsy turvy; When I cannot seem to over come a stumbling
block. Additional prayers can be generated from Forum Assignment or from
spontaneous prayers.

Chapter Three -- God's Masterpieces
- Opening Prayer
- Look at the picture on pages 22-23. Proclaim
together Psalm 92:6
- Using the scripture passages on handout, imagine you are with the
disciples in Jerusalem after Jesus' ascension. You are sharing
your memories of many things Jesus told you about himself.
- Pray Psalm 23 together
- What symbols are in the scripture passages and what are
their significance?
- Review/ correct homework: chapter 2 Assessment and
"Proclaim God's Love" psalm matching sheet
- Page 29 "Things to Share" -- words, feelings, images
- Page 24 Look at the picture. What could Jesus be
saying?
- What is a sacrament? Read questions on page 24.
- Think about "Why are we going to study the sacraments
again?". Discuss.
- Original sin and the shattering of the harmony of God's
plan. How does this affect us?
- What made the Father's plan of peace and harmony possible
for us and the world? (Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and his
victory over sin and death.)

- Highlight passages on pages 24-28. Read these 6 Key
